My Favorite Images / Sunset on Ocracoke Island, Outer Banks North Carolina

This sunset was on Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks off the coast of North Carolina. The island is 60 miles off the mainland of North Carolina with only little Ocracoke Village on its southernmost end. The remote Ocracoke Island was not permanently settled until 1750, being a pirate haven at times before then. It was a favorite anchorage of Edward Teach, better known as the pirate Blackbeard. He was killed in November 1718 in battle in Teach’s Hole, a channel slightly west of the present location of Ocracoke village.
