This photograph of a White-tailed Deer was taken late evening in the deep woods of Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I was scouting and photographing black bears when I came across a small herd of deers feeding on the forest floor. The sun was very low already and just a few sunlight rays were still reaching through the trees to the forest floor when this deer walked directly into one of those beams of light while keep a steady eye on me. The black background is the dark forest all around us and this image reminds me of a studio portrait picture.
