This male and female Mallard Ducks floating along a small pond around Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Laying on the ground allowed the ducks to be at ease with me, to calming continue feeding and floated quite close up. Mallards usually form pairs (in October and November) only until the female lays eggs at the start of nesting season which is early March to late May.
